This course addresses the philosophy and history of corrections and its role in American society. It provides an overview of the elements of corrections; the purposes of correctional punishments; and an historical perspective of punishments. Also covered are the following: correctional retribution, desert, deterrence, incapacitation, rehabilitation, and restoration; political, social, economic, human, and moral consequences of crime control; and a survey of professional career opportunities and qualifications required.
