The Fast Track NDT program option offered at Ridgewater is a result of Research conducted by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) which revealed a critical shortage of NDE Ultrasonic Level II technicians certified and capable of serving the Nuclear Industry in the United States. By 2013, it is projected that there will be a need for 400 additional Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) professional technicians to perform in-service and pre-service inspections. This shortage of NDE-Ultrasonic Level II technicians is expected to intensify in the coming years as pre-service inspections for new plants increase, scheduled license renewals and maintenance inspections of existing plants are completed, and new regulations that extend plant operation are instituted.

In 2007, EPRI began working on a solution dealing with the shortage of NDE-Ultrasonic technicians by leading an industry-funded project to develop a performance demonstration training curriculum with the goal of accelerating the qualification and certification of Ultrasonic Level II (NDE) professionals. The newly developed Fast-Track curriculum is consistent with the needs of NDE professional organizations, meets all regulatory requirements, and utilizes state-of-the-art technology and training. EPRI chose Ridgewater College to offer the new NDE-UT Fast-Track program beginning in fall 2010. The curriculum covers nuclear applications and provides students a minimum of 1050 hours of hands-on ultrasonic examination experience on an extensive collection of flawed mock-up samples. The required PDI courses accelerate the current industry practice of nearly five years of on-the-job training program into an intensive 12-month college academic program. Upon successful completion of the Fast Track program, students are prepared for the Ultrasonic Certification Testing at EPRI.
